Atkinson Elementary School Celebrates 2020 – Year of the Rat

Friday, February 21 from 6:30pm – 8:30pm

In 2020, The Lunar New Year officially begins on January 25. Typically celebrated for two weeks and follows the Lunar calendar, coinciding with phases of the Moon. (Note, our school event is a few weeks later in February).

The holiday is observed by a fifth (1/5) of the world’s population by 20 or more Asian and Southeast Asian countries, including China, Vietnam, and Korea. It is a time to tie-up loose ends, make amends, reconnect with loved ones, and say goodbye the past year (by literally sweeping the dust out the door).

You will see lots of RED decorations. The color symbolizes luck, happiness, and prosperity. We encourage families to dress in red for our school event.

An important part of festivities revolves around large gatherings of family and friends, eating traditional foods that are considered good luck. Atkinson serves a complimentary, full dinner during Lunar New Year family night.

On the menu:

Fresh Salad Rolls – Made by Atkinson 5th Graders with OLG. The tofu is donated to us by Bui’s Natural Tofu.

Sticky Rice (Xoi Gac) from Bui’s Tofu

Vietnamese Banh Mi Sandwiches from Best Baguette

Stir-fry Noodles from Du’s Grill

Mandarin Oranges

Looking forward to seeing you all!
