Buzz from the Garden
March 2016
Spring fever makes for great garden energy! While the squirrels have been trying to build nests in our compost, and the worms are waking up under the warming soil, our Garden Educators have channeled our students efforts to springtime garden activities. Winter cover crops have been cleared, seeds have been planted, and the greenhouse is filling up with vegetable starts to put in our garden beds. Thanks to our parent greenhouse watering crew, Kelly, Kara and Erin, who make it possible for us to grow our own starts.
OLG is thrilled to report that a long needed irrigation project has been completed. The fourth grade classes all went out, assessed our leak, compared the garden beds water pressure levels (or lack of), and measured the linear feet needed to replace our failed irrigation system. They also removed all the worn out hoses from the beds. Grant monies from US Fish&Wildlife Service were used to pay for the upgrade. Thank you fourth graders, USF&W, TJ from Landscape Irrigation Company who donated extra labor to the effort, our awesome PTA who provided supplemental funds for the project, and the parents who helped with the Irrigation classes.
This month’s Tend, Mend and Mingle volunteers cleared the path above the Outdoor Classroom to maintain access, weeded the Life Skills garden bed, and prepped a Potato Field in the Discovery Garden. We welcome a non-parent volunteer from the area, Lorna Grohman, who has graciously joined our team! Our gardens are looking so tended and mended!
Signs of spring: hummingbirds on the currants in the wildlife habitat, magnolia in full bloom, Trillium in the Pollinator Garden, flowers in the Magic Garden, busy, busy chickadees and more.

EARTH DAY is coming to Atkinson and the garden program will be creating art using all natural materials on locations at our campus throughout the following two days:
Kindergarten thru 2nd Grade: Friday, April 22, 2016 and Grades 3-5 Friday, April 29th. Please come join our students in this very special way to celebrate Earth Day.

ꜟLa fiebre de la primavera crea much energía en el jardín! Mientras las ardillas han estado intentando construer sus nidos en nuestro abono, y los gusanos se están despertando dentro de la tierra caliente, los educadores de nuestro huerto han canalizado los esfuerzos de nuestros estudiantes hacia las actividades primaverales del huerto. Los productos del huerto del invierno se han descubierto, las semillas se han plantado, y el invernadero se está llenando con los vegetales plantados en nuestras cajas del huerto. Gracias al equipo de padres de riego, Kelly, Kara and Erin, que hacen posible que nuestros vegetales crezcan.
OLG está entusiasmado de comunicar que el projecto de irrigación se ha completado. La clase de cuarto grado salió al jardín, asesoró nuestra fuga de agua, comparó los niveles de presión de agua (o la falta de presión) de las cajas del huerto, y midió la distancia linear en pies necesaria para reemplazar nuestro systema fallido de irrigación. Estos estudiantes también removieron todas mangeras dañadas de las cajas del huerto. Dinero de becas del US Fish & Wildlife fue usado para pagar las mejoras. Gracias a todos los estudiantes de cuarto Gardo, US F&W, TJ de Lanscape Irrigation Company que donaron trabajo extra para este esfuerzo, a nuestra maravillosa PTA que proporcionó fondos suplementarios para el projecto, y a los padres que ayudaron con las clases de irrigación.
Los voluntarios de Tend, Mend, y Mingle de este mes limpiaron el camino de arriba de la Clase Exterior para mantener el acceso, quitaron las hierbas del huerto de “habilidades para la vida (life skills),” y prepararon un Campo de Papas el Jardín de Descubrimiento. Le damos la bienvenida a un voluntario que no es un padre de Atkinson, Lorna Grohman, que se ha unido a nuestro equipo desinteresadamente! Nuestro huerto se mira tan tendido y reparado!
Señas de la primavera: colibrís en las grosellas en el habitat silvestre, magnolias en plan floración, Trilium en el jardín de polinización, flores en el Jardín Mágico, y pájaros carboneros muy, muy ocupados, y más. Feliz primavera a todos!
