Buzz from the Garden

Autumn leaves have turned color and dropped to the ground, and our students have moved from harvesting and cooking to leaf and soil studies. They have had a lot of fun with Djamila, helping each other compare and identify hidden leaves taped on their back. They learned about the FBI (Fungus, Bacteria, Insects) which breaks down our compost.
They observed soil samples, testing temperature, permeability and capillary action. It is great to see our students gaining an understanding of these ideas in such an easy, hands-on way.
Jimena has also been getting student hands dirty with critter investigation. You would be amazed as to what crawls, hides, and eats our soil. Showing respect for these little guys is part of overall mindfulness being focused on in the gardens. Jimena has also had the kids planting garlic in the Discovery Garden and cover crops in the Multicultural Garden. Garden Reps have really helped all these classes go smoothly!
We have completed a round of Garden Work Days. Your children, their teachers, and volunteer parents pitched in to tend and winterize the gardens, rake the abundance of magnolia leaves in the Multicultural Garden, and process compost. They also got to see a whole lot of Canadian geese on the move. I am happy to report a lot of safe tool use and wheel barrow handling. Knowing that the last of green tomatoes were to become salsa at the Fall Festival helped motivate our 4th and 5th graders clear out garden beds! Thank you salsa makers, rakers, compost clearers, mulch movers, and to all who helped with the hard work of maintenance and tending. Your donation of precious time and physical energy is MUCH appreciated.
How Can Parents Help?
Garden Reps!
We still have classes that don’t have Garden Representatives to assist our Garden Educators taking out your children. You do not have to have experience teaching kids, just joy of being with them. The garden teachers will be leading the curriculum- you just are there as a much-needed extra hand.
As a garden rep, you can also make time with your teacher once per month in addition to the garden teacher’s time to take the kids out and learn in the garden. You can team up with a partner if you feel unsure about how to help. Sarah-Lu, Mrs Essex’s garden rep, is happy to help out with discussions about curriculum, ideas, etc. Let us know at the main office if you are interested!
Upcoming Dates
TEND MEND AND MINGLE: Friday, November 20th, 9am We will be clearing the Pollinator garden for planting, weeding the Prairie Garden, and raising a trellis for our grapevines in Discovery so that we will all finally be able to know we have grapes! This is a parents-only opportunity to work in the garden and get to know some new folks. Interested in helping, contact us!

Zumbidoo de los jardines

Las hojas de otoño han cambiado de color y se han caido al suelo, y nuestros estudiantes han cambiado de la recolección y cocinar a los estudios de las hojas y la tierra. Ellos se han divertido mucho con Djamila, ayudándose los unos a los otros a comparar e idéntificar las hojas escondidas pegadas en sus espaldas. Han aprendido sobre el FBI (hongos, bacteria, insectos) que descomponen la tierra. Observaron ejemplos de tierra, probando su temperatura, permeabilidad y acción capilar. Es fantástico ver a los estudiantes mejorando el entendimiento de estas ideas usando sus manos.
Jimena también ha estado ensuciando las manos de los estudiantes para investigar animalitos. Ustedes se sorprenderían de lo que anda, se esconde, y se come nuestra tierra. Mostrar respeto a estas criaturas pequeñas es parte de la conciencia general enfocada en nuestros jardines. Jimena también ha tenido a los niños plantando ajo en el Jardín de Descubrimiento y ha cubierto los cultivo en el Jardín Multicultural. Los representantes de los jardines han ayudado mucho para que todas las clases del jardín hayan ido facilmente!
Hemos completado una Ronda de Los Días de Trabajo del Jardín. Sus hijos/as, sus maestros/as, y los padres voluntarios ayudaron a cubrir y proteger los jardines para el invierno, arrastrar las hojas abundantes de magnolia en el jardín multicultural, y procesar el abono. Los niños también vieron muchos gansos canadienses volando. Estoy feliz de comunicarles del use seguro de las herramientas y el uso seguro de las carretillas. Saber que los últimos tomates verdes iban a ser utilizados para hacer salsa en el Festival de Otoño motivó a nuestros estudiantes de 4th y 5th grado para limpiar las cajas del jardín! Gracias a ustedes, los que hicieron salsa, los que limpiaron el abono, los que movieron la mantilla, y a todos los que ayudaron con su trabajo duro de manutención y tendimiento!! La donación de su tiempo precioso y su energía física es MUY apreciada
Cómo pueden ayudar los padres?
Pueden ser representantes del jardín!!
Todavía tenemos clases que no tienen representantes del jardín para ayudar a nuestros educadores del jardín a sacar a los niños/as afuera al jardín. Usted no necesita tener experiencia enseñando a niños/as, solamente disfrutar de estar con ellos. Los maestros del jardín van a enseñar el curriculum a los niños/as, usted solamente está ahí para proveer una ayuda muy necesitada.
Como representante del jardín, usted también puede hacer tiempo con su maestro/a una vez al més para sacar a los niños/as al jardín y aprender. Usted se puede juntar con otro representante si no está seguro/a en como ayudar. Sarah-Lu, Mrs Essex’s representante del jardín, le gustaría ayudarle con discusiones sobre el curriculum, ideas, etc. Díganos si está interesado/a!
